ROLLER ) |

 |
| Curved rubber rollers, being
of constant diameter and on a curved, nonrotating
shaft, allow material to run at uniform tension
across the web while in contact with the rollers
have approximately twice as much shaft bow
as the spreader rollers in expanding or spreading
textiles, paper or film these rollers utilize
two principles : expansion through perpendicular
force applied in the entering span, and expansion
of the roller cover. |
| |
| EXPANSION IN THE
ENTERING SPAN |
As the web approaches the
curved roller, its center travels over the
roller perpendicular to the rotation axis
and goes straight ahead. Each increment of
the web on either side of center travels perpendicular
to the curved surface it contacts, and is
therefore spread in proportion to its distance
from the center.
The spreading achieved by a curved roller
in the entering span cannot be predicted bu
geometry, but involves the theory of elasticity
as it applies to the material being, spread.
Maximum spreading would occur if individual
strands were being handled; this idealized
expansion can be predicted by geometry. Figure
1 shows the spreading of individuals strands,
which seem to radiate from the center of roller
curvature if the entering spand is projected
into the plane of the roller.
The entering span expansion theory can be
applied to the opening of a web that has been
slit into many narrows strips, much like the
“individual strands” sketch shown
in Figure 1. This same theory would apply
to the maximum spreading of a web with many
severe longitudinal wrinkles or crease, up
to the lateral tautness of the web at the
curved roller.
The pre-entering span can be factor in the
Behavior of a web on a curved roller. Attempts
to open a slit web could be totally unsuccessful
if the pre-entering span is somewhat longer
that the entering span, or if the web slit
before the pre-entering span.(See Figure 2.)
The entering idler may steer the slit-web
strips toward each other further than the
curved roller can steer them apart causing
them to overlap |
